John Gerber began his ministry at First Baptist Church on October 1, 2002. Prior to coming to First Baptist, he was the choral director at Weatherford High School, a position he held for 22 years. During his tenure in the public schools he has served as interim minister of music several times as well as church pianist. John has also served as minister of music at Velma First Baptist, Boise City First Baptist, and Weatherford Emmanuel Baptist Church.
John received the Director of Distinction Award for 2002 from the American Choral Director's association for the state of Oklahoma. He is also a recipient of the Oklahoma Music Educator's Hall of Fame Award for 2003. He is on the board of the Oklahoma Choral Director’s Association, and serves as editor of the OCDA magazine.
John holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree as well as a Master of Education degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with certification in vocal, instrumental, and psychology.
John's wife, Midge, is a recently retired teacher from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. They have two children, Casey, and Courtney, and four grandchildren. Casey, his wife, Christa, and son, Owen, and daughter, Stella, live in Shawnee, Oklahoma, where he is on staff at Oklahoma Baptist University. Courtney, her husband Jeremy, and daughters, Logann and Merritt, live in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
